SALINA
GREEN ISLAND

In the heart of the Aeolian Archipelago

Salina shows itself with its high Twin Peaks, Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri, in the blue of the sky and the sea.

VALDICHIESA

A particularly cool and moisture-rich microclimate favors the crops of delicious Aeolian products.

The two mountains, which fruited to the island in antiquity the name of Didyme, the "twin", are what remains of the six extinct volcanoes that gave the rise to the island – probably the oldest after Filicudi. The suggestive saddle of Valdichiesa (290 m asl) connects them, combining them in a perennial dialogue, alive, made of currents and winds, which gives a particularly cool and rich microclimate and promotes the crops of the delicious island products, first among all the vineyards of the delicious Malvasia and capers, whose production is famous all over the world.
The name, which originates from the salt marshes of the language pond, a commercial resource of the island since antiquity, already evokes its nature linked on one side to the sea, on the other to the availability of natural resources. The abundance (relative to the other islands) of water and vegetation makes it particularly generous and enjoyable, with its scents, colours and different flavors all year round, almost immersed in a sort of "divine" feminine sensuality all its own. And if the femininity of the island is all in these sweet and double forms that are perceived by the sea, it is also reflected, from the mythological point of view in a strong cult originating in the divinities linked to fertility, and today in the most heard Marian cult of the archipelago , devoted to the Madonna of the third party in the Sanctuary of Valdichiesa (Leni). The legend represents her with a bell in the right hand thanks to which the Virgin made miraculously find an icon abandoned by an hermit monk on the mountain.
Populated since ancient times, today it offers all itself to the lovers of archaeology and ethnology with the caves dug in the tuff, visible to the Rinella (Leni), the archaeological site of Portella (Malfa) and a visit to the archaeological section of the ethno-anthropological Museum of Language (Santa Marina Salina), that houses the exhibits from the sites of Barone and Portella, including: The Hall of the Pithoi (large vases from the huts of the bronze village of the average age of Portella), the bronze sword, the Mycenaean necklace, dating back to 1500 a.C.
However, the insularity of these lands has helped to preserve their biodiversity and the integrity of the flora, fauna, landscape and soil, leaving us the chance to still appreciate its salient characters.

Geology in Salina

The volcanic nature makes Salina an island for everybody, full of unique and suggestive sceneries.

The peculiar volcanic aspects, testimony of the geological processes, the subject of the studies of the volcanologic world, already in the 2000 had fruited to the Aeolian Islands the inclusion by UNESCO in the World Heritage List, among the sites "heritage of humanity". Today, the constant commitment to the care of the territory and the energy and efficient waste management policies that allow both the inhabitants and the tourists to enjoy the natural beauties, have awarded the island of Salina in June 2012, with the 5 sails for the Blue Guide Ranking of Legambiente and touring Club making the national leader list.
These characteristics make the Aeolian Islands and Salina in particular an island for all, from trekking enthusiasts, with excursions to the natural reserve of the oriented mountain Fossa delle Felci, or along the path that from the traffic light of Pollara proceeds on the side of Monte dei Porri towards Leni, excursions during which it is not uncommon to be able to admire the majestic flight of the Falcon of the Queen, a colony of which nests on Monte dei Porri at the height of Branda wire or sighting endemic animal or plant species. Divers can find, even with simple dives, in the different seabed of the island, suggestive and unique sceneries, between rocks and prairies of oceanic Posidonia, sunken sea stacks and starfish. The most experienced volcanologists will be satisfied with the history of the geological formation of the island that is offered in the cliffs and even in the rocky layers visible from the road rolling.
The beauty of Salina was also the protagonist of the film "Il postino" by Massimo Troisi, who celebrated the colors, the scents and its authentic Mediterranean beauty.
